Mentoring

Every person has their own journey but that doesn’t mean you need to walk it alone.

One of the things I never had whilst I was starting my career, or just in life in general, was a mentor who really inspired me. I had people who were my ‘people manager’ or ‘line manger’, people who tried to ‘coach’ and to ‘motivate’, but none of those really felt like a true mentor.

Mentoring to me is a deeply personal relationship. You are helping someone with their journey through life and providing them with appropriate support and challenge. You don’t lead them or guide them, you merely share your experiences and help them better understand themselves and the journey they are on.

I see mentoring as advising for an individual. Whereas with advising your priority and responsibility it to the company, charity or corporate entity and its well being, with mentoring the responsibility is to a person in a one-to-one relationship.

Some people describe this as ‘life coaching’ or even counselling. I just see it as being there for someone when they need someone. I am not trained or qualified counsellor or life coach, I am just some guy who has a wide and varied experience who is willing to share it with those who need help.

If you are interested in having a discussion about mentoring, please feel free to get in touch with me directly.

Thanks
